Tutoring/Academic Support Center

Taking a course you just can't grasp? The Academic Support Center (ASC) provides free, drop-in tutoring in most subjects taught at ARCC. The ASC also supports an on-site computer lab, a collection of study skills and writing tips, handouts, and information on study groups and upcoming student success workshops.

Contact the Academic Support Center as soon as you feel like you're having difficulty with a class - do not wait until the end of the semester. The ASC wants to put you in charge of your own learning through collaboration with peer tutors. If you are frustrated or confused, you can get clarification. If you already feel confident in your work, you can improve even more. We can help improve your preparation for exams, provide feedback about how to clarify your ideas on a paper, or present a math problem from a slightly different angle to help you find the answer.

Peer Tutors

Peer Tutors are ARCC students who excel in their coursework, possess skills and qualities that make them ideal helpers, and have been recommended by ARCC faculty as demonstrating superior subject knowledge. Peer Tutors are well-suited to offer support because they have recently taken many of the same classes that you are in now. This makes them uniquely qualified and you will know you are getting experienced and knowledgeable assistance. Tutors want to develop active, independent learners in the students with whom they work.

If you are interested in becoming a peer tutor, visit or contact the ASC or ask a teacher.

Tutor Training

As the old adage states, “experience is the best teacher.”
This especially holds true for tutoring. Sheer practical experience will give new tutors many of the tools that they need. But before tutors embark on this journey called “experience," it is extremely important to start out with some basic guidelines.

Follow the steps below:

Please complete the following assignments and attend the required face-to-face training sessions on your campus:

  1. Complete the Interdisciplinary Tutor Training assignments, print them and hand them in to the Academic Support Center.
  2. View the Tutor Training Video (must have QuickTime to load) and record answers on notebook paper to be turned in to the ASC upon completion. Do not click on submit button.
  3. Tutors, discover your personal learning style. Take the Index of Learning Styles Questionnaire. Submit your answers directly and receive an informative visual.
